Texture and smoothness of oil paints. I never forget the feeling of paints spreading on a canvas that I never felt ever when I was an art school students and it has caught me since then. Everything on my art started at an art school I studied after junior high. Since then, I only draw oil paintings.

--Please tell me your method or ritual on works.
-
I took photographs of scenes first, then I draw looking it stores into my tablet. I always draw freehand regardless materials of support. I crop the scenery to make a balance between the drawing and a canvas. On the contrary I have no crop on a panel, and I layer and layer paints.
--I would like to ask you about this solo exhibition entitled “Stance”. What will you exhibit?
-
It’s all landscape painting. Some are on canvases, some are on panels.
--The landscape you draw is very interesting. We went to sites you draw in Benten cho.. They were all old factories in a corner of town, houses with objects being stacked casually. Why do you draw them?
-
One reason is that landscape was so familiar with me, I grow up this town. For me, I don’t smell of life, smell that human create in our everyday life. Most of people do not care about it. They exist just the way they are. They will not change even if surroundings change. These atmosphere fascinate me very much.
-
--Where is the place used for the exhibition flyer?
-
This is Okishima, a tiny island on the Lake Biwako. I found on the internet. It’s as if time has stopped, very nostalgic. No choice but to go there! I drew this on the panel.
--Any discipline on choosing the landscape you draw?
-
I don’t draw as it is. I zoom and crop on drawing, so I look for balance.
--What would you like to message through the title “Stance”?
-
I entitled “Stance” because stance is the keyword on my works. Stance means “opinions” and “position”. Everybody has own “opinions” and “position” even looking for the same landscape. It looks like the same scene but it is not the same depending on opinions and stances. I draw with my stance and you see my works with your stance.
-
--Pictures are in focus clearly but there is a part that is out of focus in every piece I felt.
-
I don’t conscious about it well but it probably is because of my out of focus. You know, I draw it with my tablet repeating zooming and leaving. Zoomed parts were drawn so precisely in detail. So, if there is an “out of focus” part, I might have thought it is not important for me. That’s one of “Stance”, isn’t it?
--Do you try to reproduce faithfully the landscape you took picture on drawing?
-
No, never. I always edit it by my view point. Of course I draw the same scene though. One of my aim is that the audience spontaneously feel “this was drawn by looking photograph”. If I pursue the “reality”, my purpose changes.
--Tell me what inspired you other than paintings.
-
I love Radio Head! My favorite movies are U Boat and a series of God Father. I love reading Mishima. Am I a bit peculiar?
--What motivated you to be a painter?
-
Oh, I have never talked about it before though… I felt “I have nothing on my life” when I was the art school student. I have nothing to fun, just went to school every day. Something in my mind wanted and sought to have “one thing” as a meaning of my life strongly and eagerly. That’s my catalyst to keep drawing. It’s not easy to keep this motivation but I know I feel empty if I quite painting. So I will keep painting.
-
--What would you like try in future?
-
I think I should communicate with people more. I would like to make opportunities to share my art and to talk about it. I feel I am wanting to go outside, it is a sort of natural desire in my mind. I feel positive desire on my painting.
